Scandinavian Golf finally gave the Volvo Masters something to shine about after a very wet tournament left the Dane Søren Kjeldsen with the biggest tournament title of his career to date, with swede Robert Karlsson clinching the European Tour Order of Merit.

The Dane Søren Kjeldsen fought hard from day one scoring a fantastic 65 in wet and windy conditions to take the title at the 21t and final Volvo Masters being played at the prestigious Valderrama Golf Club in Sotogrande. The 33 year old from Aalborg also picked up a healthy cheque of around € 708.000 Euros.

Robert Karlsson put the icing on the top of this Scandinavian success story becoming the first player form Sweden to win the European Tour Order of Merit, edging-out the formidable double ‘Major’ champion Padraig Harrington by around € 273,000 Euros.

Volvo Masters at Valderrama - End of an Era

Well I guess it had to come to an end some time, and so it will as 2008 is the year the prestigious Volvo Masters will say goodbye to one the finest golf courses in Spain - Valderrama.

The 21st and final Volvo masters will be held between the 30th October and November 2nd where around 60 of Europe's top golfers will battle it out for a record prize fund of some 3.928 Million pounds.

Some of the past winners taking part this year include, Nick Faldo, Padraig Harrington, Darren Clark, Ian Poulter, Colin Montgomerie, Lee Westwood, Sandy Lyle and last years illustrious winner Justin Rose.

The event this year will I am sure be a great success as always , perhaps even more so as it will be the last time it will be played on this fantastic and well maintained course for many a year to come. The Volvo masters at Valderrama has always been spectator friendly and one of the very few venues where the many thousands of golf lovers residing on the Costa del Sol get to see and enjoy some of Europe's top players ( including 16 of the worlds top golfers ) in there own back yard.

The masters is being replaced next year by the newly named Volvo World Matchplay Championship which will be played at the new Finca Cortesin golf Resort, and although this fairly new course is one the finest on the Costa del Sol I still have reservations about the overall quality or space to showcase such a prestigious event... only time will tell on that one.

Ticket prices range from 15 to 35 Euros with special weekly pass rates.

Senior PGA Staff inspect La Cala Golf ahead of Ladbrokescasino Masters

Two senior staff from the Professional Golfers’ Association have visited the La Cala Resort in Mijas, ahead of the Ladbrokescasino.com Masters, which will take place at the resort this autumn. The tournament is part of the Ivobank PGA EuroPro Tour, regarded as the world’s leading developmental tour.

The event will be held from September 21-25 at Campo Asia, one of three 18-hole courses on the complex. Simon Higginbottom, Senior Tournament Director and Edward Johnson, Tournament Controller, were very pleased with the condition of the course and the other facilities at the resort. “Campo Asia is in extremely good order and is practically in tournament condition at the moment,” commented Simon. “We will be coming back before September but are happy with what we have seen on this, our first inspection trip,” he added.The Tour will comprise 14 tournaments, 10 of which take place in England. The others in Portugal, France, Ireland and La Cala. The Irish event is held at Faithlegg House Hotel and Golf Club, which belongs to the FBD Holdings, the same company that owns La Cala. “The players will love coming here.

It will be one of the most important weeks of the year for them as it represents the last chance for them to qualify for the Tour Championship at Les Bordes in France in October,” stated Edward.Two Pro-Ams have been scheduled for the Sunday and Monday before the tournament. The event itself will be broadcast on Sky Sports in early October.

Lauro Golf - 16th Anniversary

16th Anniversary of Lauro Golf

Lauro Golf recently celebrated its sixteenth year in existence. This truly wonderful course located in Alhaurin de la Torre , held its anniversary party last Saturday the 9th of August which was presided over by Aveyro´s Duke along with many old friends and collaborators of this well known golf club. The party was held in the old courtyard of the picturesque Club House which commenced around about 09:30 in the evening and included a dinner-buffet with music and dance.

Lauro Golf was opened in 1992 and has been one of the coasts leading and popular courses ever since.

Due to its attractive design and excellent maintenance conditions all the year it has a good member and clientele base and has always been at the forefront of offering quality golf at reasonable prices with many green fee offers and tournaments available throughout the year.

Lauro Golf now has more than 500 members, with many local societies consisting of Spanish and foreign players playing regularly at the club. This has ensured that the player numbers at Lauro Golf have been steadily on the increase over these past years.

Lauro Golf has supported and sponsored many charity associations , organizing several open charity competitions with the total proceeds destined to help and assist each invaluable cause.

Lauro Golf is now a member of Iagto, the global organization of the golf tourism, destined to offer the best quality of service and the best experience in the practice of this sport to all the players with the objective of being a major reference in the tourism world of golf on the “Costa del Sol”.

Lauro Golf continues improving its installations in order it can increase its varied services including the practice the other sports within its installations. EatGolf - Stylish Golf Magazine in Spain

The other day I had the pleasure of meeting a very amiable chap called Nick Senior at the Annual El Chaparral pairs golf tournament . Nick is Editor and joint publisher of a quality EATGolf magazine available for free in Spain.

Nick informed me that " Eat Golf! is the stylish, modern and innovative golf publication which has received high praise since its initial launch on the Costa del Sol in 2005. Each issue is full of engaging and relevant editorial, including exclusive in depth interviews, and articles written by the PGAs of Europe and the Ladies European Tour".

I decided to have a good read myself over the weekend of their latest edition ( 14th ) and found the articles very informative and layout is fresh very appealing with some excellent photography to back up the well written content. It is printed on good quality paper and the advertising has been kept to a minimum so your not getting bombarded with ads on every page.

Nick also mentioned "the magazine is available for free at the finest golf clubs and outlets in Spain and Portugal, or through carefully selected distribution" .

The style and content of the magazine appeals to golfers of all ages, both male & female, from amateur to professional.

The Stableford Scoring Method

For those golf players who plan to start competing in golf tournaments the most popular form of scoring the competiton will be the Stableford method, but what exactly is it and how does it work.

This points scoring system originated by Dr Frank Stableford (1870-1959) and was first used on 16 May 1932 at the wallasey Golf Club in Cheshire. The Stableford system was included in the end pages of Rules books from 1952, and in 1968 received official recognition as a form of play by being moved to the main body of the Rules.

Stableford scoring systems are stroke-play formats in which the high total wins, not the low. That's because in Stableford, your final score is not your stroke total, but rather the total points you have earned for your scores on each individual hole.

Definition: A Stableford competition is a golf tournament in which the object is to get the highest score. That's because in Stableford, golfers are awarded points based on their scores in relation to a fixed score at each hole. That fixed score can be par, or any number of strokes a tournament committee chooses (6, 8, whatever).

Scoring Example: ( see also acore card above ).

Usuall Stableford points system:

Bogey. 1 Pt

Par: 2 Pts

One under par: 3 Pts

2 under par: 4 pts

3 under par: 5 Pts

4 under par: 6 pts

Lets say your an 18 handicapped player and are given 1 extra shot in each hole. Therfore if your play out a hole in 5 shots in total on a par 4 hole you will have achieved your par with this scoring method and will be awarded 2 points. To mark Stableford on a scorecard, it's most common to use two rows this way makes the scorecard easier to mark and easier to read later. ( see score card above ) The top row is your stroke play score - the number of strokes you took to complete the hole. The second row is the Stableford points earned on that hole. At the end of each nine, tally up your Stableford points, and at the end of 18, add your two nines together for your final Stableford score.

Sphereing or "Hill Rolling " is now available at the picturesque Benalmadena Golf and Leisure Complex and is included as part of the new " Fun Trips " on offer and being well organized by the club management ( Aymerich ) along with Spheremaniaespaña ( an adventure sport company based in Spain ).

What is Sphereing you might say, well its basically tearing down a hill at around 45 kms per hour inside a 4 metre inflatable sphere, yes you heard it your strapped inside a big plastic ball while it carreers down a long hill.

There is two types of Sphereing , aqua and harness. Harness-Sphereing is where you are physically harnessed in the sphere with other participants and the other ( Aqua-Sphereing ) has been referred to as rolling down a hill in a washing machine where 2 participants are free rolling in around 30 liters of water unharnessed...sounds great fun actually, why didn't someone think of this before you might ask.

Charity Week at La Cala Golf "West Sindrom Foundation"

La Cala Resort has decided to run a week in aid of the West Syndrome Foundation. On Monday, July 21st, Wednesday, July 23rd and Friday, July 25th the green fee has been set at only €30 including buggy. On Sunday, July 27th there will be an open competition for €35 followed by a clinic with top playing professional, Simon Dyson. The West Syndrome Foundation will receive a proportion of the green fees and competition entries.

West syndrome, otherwise known as infantile spasms, is an uncommon to rare and serious form of epilepsy in infants. Up to 90% of children suffer severe physical and cognitive impairments, even when treatment for the attacks is successful.

Volvo World Matchplay Championship 2009

Arguably the biggest business name in European golf, Volvo, was today unveiled as the new exclusive title sponsor and joint Management partner of the World Match Play Championship ahead of its 45th anniversary in 2009 in an innovative initial three-year agreement with IMG,
who created the iconic event in 1964.

Along with a new format and qualification criteria (see attached), the Volvo World Match Play Championship will also move to a new home, the 7,439-yard Par-72 Finca Cortesín Golf Club near Malaga in the Andalucia region of Spain and will see a stellar match play field going
head-to-head for a million-dollar-plus champion’s cheque.

Sanctioned by The European Tour and bringing together 16 of the top golfers from every continent in the world, the new Volvo World Match Play Championship, scheduled for Autumn 2009, will offer official prize money of €3,250,000 (approx. US$5million / SEK30million) and

Lauro Golf celebrates the IX Cudeca Trophy

Lauro Golf celebrated last Saturday 14th June for the ninth consecutive year the traditional Charity Cudeca Trophy with the aim of raising funds for this foundation.

CUDECA is an institution created to provide “specialized care” in Palliative Care to patients who will not be able to win their battle against cancer, with support to their family during the disease and after the loss of the loved one. This foundation who has offered palliative home care without cost to thousands of patients with the collaboration of the qualified international volunteering community residents in the Costa del Sol.

So great is the labour developed by this institution that Joan Hunt, President and Founder of Cudeca, was awarded the Honour of the British Empire – O.B.E. in the 2002, New Year Honour List for services to cancer care in southern Spain; and more recently in 2006 with the support of the Spanish Royal Family in the official inauguration of the Palliative Care Hospice with the visit of the Infanta Doña Cristina de Borbón.

Lauro Golf wanted to contribute to this labour, raising funds with the generous support of more than 50 participants, mostly members of the club. All green fees were donated in a cheque of more than 600 euros given to Mrs. Laura Haggis, representative of Cudeca by the caddy master at Lauro Golf Melissa Gallardo and the president of the Competition Comite Tove M. Pedersen.

The modality of the game was stableford with two categories according to the handicap and prizes to the three best classified on each category. But the best new came right after the prize giving when a Lauro Golf member who prefers to remain anonymous told us his intention of donating a huge amount of money to help Cudeca with its wonderful labour.

Mediterranean Golf made its debut with its first golf show at the "Palacio de Ferias y Congresos" ( Malagas new exhibition centre ) .

The doors are open to the public from the 16th to the 19th April 2008 and coincides with

the 5th International Golf and Environment Forum organized by PROMOTOUR (Association of Residential, Sport and Health Tourism of Andalusia).

The Golf Show is mainly aimed at professionals with Mediterranean Golf promising to become a reference within the golfing industry around the entire Mediterranean area. Their objective is to provide the industry with a federative commercial platform for the golf sector in Europe and the Mediterranean.

I visited the exhibition on a personal level with a few friends and enjoyed testing a wide variety of clubs at the Wilson stand, along with trying out a Golf simulator open to all members of the public and for a bit of fun spent quite a few minutes on the WII stand playing what else but Golf !!.

Although I understand that the show was more focused on the golfing business as a whole I was slightly disappointed that there where not more well known companies represented at the show such as Callaway, Taylormade etc and indeed more local and national business,s offering products and services to the golfing industry.

New agreement for Watering Costa Golf Courses

Some 35 courses located on the western Costa del Sol can now use partially recycled water

for course watering.

After a large investment of around 6 Million Euros and an agreement reached by Acuamed and Acosol it consists of partially treating sewage to make it fit enough for golf course use.

Some 66.000 cubic meters of water will be made available every day for watering courses and is a positive step in the right direction to make courses as Eco friendly as possible in the future.

The Santa Clara golf course is a beautiful Federation competition standard course located

in the town of Otura at the foothills of the stunning Sierra Nevada mountain range, some 5 minutes drive from the centre of Granada.

The course was designed by the well known golfing architect Enrique Canales Busquets and created with the up most respect for the beautiful natural environment and

provides a fantastic and unique meeting place for golf enthusiasts.

This is Par 72 of 6.598 meters, it has long wide open fairways and huge lush fast moving greens with few areas that are out of bounds although there are a large variety of obstacles which make this a challenging for all players of all handicaps .

The third hole is a long par 5 at 550 meters, as well as its seventh, thirteenth and fourteenth, with 463, 544 and 521 respectively, which require golfers to make long and accurate shots.

The course maintenance at Santa Clara is second to none and one of the best I have played in Andalucia. All in an unforgettable experience I hope to repeat in the near future.

The Parador golf course in the heart of the Costa del Sol has a privileged location by the sea and next to Malaga International airport and city.The Parador golf course is also known as The Royal Malaga Golf Course and has ties back to the Royal Family in Britain in it’s beginning in 1925.The designer of Wentworth East coast Harry Sephard Colt supervised the first nine holes and later the renowned British architect Tom Simpson (whose famous courses are Turnberry, Muirfield and Ballybunion) expanded the course to 18 holes.Recently a further nine holes have been added to give golfers more combinations in their round and there is also a nine hole pitch and putt.

Parador is enjoyed by many local members and visitors arriving and departing from Malaga and offers a challenging round with the wind always around.Parador has some great holes the following are some playing tips for some of them.

Hole 4 is a long and difficult par 4 with the fairways undulation making the stance on the long second shot tricky especially as the green is protected left and right with bunkers.

Hole 7 is another long hole with the green protected by water on the right side and bunkers.Hole 9 is difficult to reach and a tricky par 3 due to windy conditions. The green is very undulating and difficult to read however, there are a wide variety of refreshments after you finish including tapas.

Hole 11 is a par 3 next to the beach where again the wind plays an important role. The green has water to the right side and a sand trap on the left.

Hole 12 is an interesting and tricky par 5 where the tee shot is played between two large trees. The green on this hole is elevated so take an extra club especially as there is a large streambed in front.

Hole 14 is an easier par 5 although like many of these holes the rough is sandy rough and hard to play out of. The green is surrounded by water so you must hit the target.

Hole 16 is a par 5 made difficult by the winds coming of the sea. The hole like many on this course is lined by oleander bushes and mimosa trees. The green is right next to the sea but can be reached in two.

Hole 18 is one of the most difficult par 4`s on the Costa del Sol with a double dog leg keep drives away from the forest area of the left. The tee shot is hard on this hole also because of the noise coming form the birds nest in the trees near by.Parador is partly a links course and every hole is a challenge not only due to the layout but because of the wind and its changing direction.

Santana Golf Course Tips

Santana Golf Course is set in an old avocado farm situated between La Cala and Fuengirola in a picturesque parkland, very peaceful setting. Although a relatively new course it has the feel of a mature course, with wide well defined fairways on a level terrain making this a course that can be walked.

The course is a par 72 and can be demanding on a technical level where each unique hole offers its own challenges for all level of golfer. It is an enjoyable course to play where greens are protected but not surrounded by bunkers or water.Santana has some great holes the following is some information and some playing tips for some of them.

Hole 3 has an elevated tee position where you want to play to middle left as the fairway slopes from right to left.

Hole 4 has many choices for the golfer with bunkers in the middle of the fairway, and a stream before the green. It is a slight dog leg to the left and has a harrow green protected by two bunkers.

Hole 6 the corner of the dog leg to the left over a cork tree can be driven making an easier approach shot however, the green is tricky with many contours.

Hole 8 is a beautiful sweeping par 5 where you must drive to the left to have a chance of a second to the green. There are some trees to the right of the fairway that means this is a definite par 5 if you play down this side.Hole 10 starts the back nine with a beautiful par 5 with a wide open fairway, play to the left for a direct route to the long green. The left approach to the green is protected by a lake and the there a couple of bunkers to the right of the green.

Hole 12 is a downhill shot to a very undulating green making the par is not that easy.

Hole 15 has bunkers on the right hand side of the fairway that can not be seen, although this seems the line to the green. There are also bunkers short of the green to the left and water behind and right of the green. There are many possible ways of playing this hole depending on your distance.

Hole 18 is a demanding finish to this beautiful course with a lake to the right and avocado trees on the right the fairway is narrow. The green is very undulating so the approach shot is important.Santana Golf Course is always a great round of golf and after playing once you want to be tested again. Always enjoy your golf.

Torrequebrada Golf Course Tips

Torrequebrada Golf Course was opened in 1976 and was designed by Jose Pepe Gancedo one of Spain’s most promising amateurs who has designed many courses in Spain. The course hosted the 53rd Spanish Open Championship in 1979 and is an undulating course with spectacular views along the coast.

This course is not the longest but still provides a tough test for all golf levels where tee shots are particularly important for scoring well. With views out to the Mediterranean and a large amount and variety of trees and shrubs on the course, it is always a pleasure to play this course.Torrequebrada has some great holes the following are some playing tips for some of them.

Hole 1 is a par 5 and not an easy start with a dog leg left and a thin green which is well protected with six bunkers.

Hole 3 is a short par 3 and not to tricky but it is one of the best holes for spectacular views of this area and out to sea.Hole 7 has a high tee position and a tight driving line with out of bounds on the right, bunkers on the fairway and later surrounding the green, and a lake catching the longer drives.

Hole 8 is a sharp dog leg thus needing a drive with the correct club and correct line. You will need an extra club for the approach shot as the green looks closer due to a hollow in front.

Hole 10 is the start of a tough back nine at Torrequebrada. This hole is a dog leg to the left with a lake on the right side. Ideally you want to drive to the right to make the approach easier but don’t over club to the green as there is trouble behind.

Hole 13 is a par 3 where you hit 150 meters over a valley. Like many of the holes on this course the green is well protected with bunkers.

Hole 16 is the hardest hole on the course with the tee back amongst the trees and the hole dog leg to the right. The fairway slopes form left to right with a lake running along the right side. There are bunkers amongst the trees on the left and not hit short over the lake to the green otherwise the ball will role back down.

Torrequebrada Golf Course is a challenging course and hard to score well on, unless you plan your hole ahead (and play well!). The clubhouse is friendly with a large terrace to enjoy drinks at the 19th.Always enjoy your golf.Regards,Sungolfer - The Perfect Round of Golf

The 3rd Miguel Angel Jimenez Junior open tournament was recently held at the Gaudalhorce Golf Club in Malaga.

As where the previous two competitions this one was as popular as ever with over 82 participants split into three groups and ranging from 8 to 16 years of age taking part.

The winners of each category received a fantastic set of Ping clubs, with additional prizes of golf bags, clubs, hats etc being handed out to many of the participants on the day.

The Miguel Angel Jimenez Childrens Golf Clinic

The Clinic took place at the Lauro golf course in Alhaurin de la Torre to celebrate the " II Charity Tournament Colegio International Torrequebrada" .

The day was organised by the International college of Torrequebrada with the support of numerous sponsors and Lauro Golf and who’s common aim is to help the charity foundation "Ciudad de los niños". The amateur golf tournament was attended by well over a hundred players, a second junior tournament with almost 40 children and a kids clinic. The clinic was overseen by one of Spain’s true golfing champions , Miguel Angel Jimenez, inspiring every child who attended the course.

Among other activitiies during the day was a charity auction which was handled expertly by the well known “Malagueño” comic Manolo Sarriá who formed part of “Duo Sacapuntas”. Fantastic prizes were auctioned, such as a T-shirt signed by Real Madrid players which reached 600€, a PING golf bag signed by Miguel Angel Jimenez who successfully raised the amount of 2200 euros, a T-shirt signed by the basket players from Unicaja Malaga, a ball signed by the entire Malaga football team.

Theis golf Charity Tournament was held as usual at Lauro Golf, as a part of the clubs activities programme. Lauro Golf contributes 0.7% of the greenfees to different Charity Organization like Save the Children or Teléfono de la Esperanza (Hope phone).
The winners of the junior tournament, were Martti Oliva Koskela, Carlos Sandoval and Miguel Angel Jimenez (Jr.). In the adult tournament, the winners were, in the first category Alexander Walsoe and in the second category Christian Arnolin.

In conclusion it was a warm and friendly atmosphere and supported by the good will of all the participants, organizers and the international golf champion Miguel Angel Jiménez who once again helped out willingly to support the cause.

Lauro Golf is one of the golf courses in Málaga area. Situated in the precious landscape of municipality of Alhaurín de la Torre, at 300 metres above the sea level and just at 20 minutes from the airport, Lauro Golf offers spectacular views of the valley of Malaga and the Mediterranean. La Reserva de Sotgrande is an exclusive golf club situated within the prestigious golf valley of Sotogrande, home of other notable courses such as Valderrama, San Roque and Sotogrande.

It opened in 2003 and is set amongst a truly natural and beautiful backdrop of lush green rolling hills, mountains and spectacular sea views.

It boasts one of Spain most salubrious club houses where no expense has been spared to ensure every detail has not been overlooked. It has been built in the purest of Andalacian styles and has exclusive areas for members only.

The course was designed by Cabell Robinson and has been built to USGA standards.Despite the course only opening in 2003 a lot of the trees that where already growing in the area where in fact transferred and stored during construction, then replanted to give an established feel to the course.

The course is relatively long at 6.448 mts off the white tees, with wide and undulating fairways, while the greens are large and often sloping. Long putts on fast greens are a feature of this course. Water comes into play on six holes, although they should not present too much of a problem. The 14th on the back nine has just one bunker, situated on the right of the green, and there are some magnificent views from the 15th hole. There is an elevated tee overlooking the tricky green on the short 16th hole.

Casares Golf opened in 2006 and takes his name from the are where it is located.

Although it currently offers only 9 holes each one is interesting and although not over difficult to playit will allow you to use all the clubs in your bag .There are 5 Par 4s and 1 Par 5 so by playing two rounds you will enjoy feel as though you have played a normal 18 hole course and at around 35 Euros for two rounds it is great value.

Beware of the 6th Hole, an interesting Par 5 of around 498 mts, your tee shot must be accurate enoughdown a narrow fairway to ensure you have a view of the lake and green on your second shot. The green is well positionedon the left hand side to make this hole challenging for players of all standards, the green is well guarded by a lake at th front, and if you over hit your approach shot here your ball will over shoot the green and end up up out of bounds .

Being a new course it is in good condition although lacking in established trees and vegetation which will enhance the course even more in the coming years.

Marbella Club Golf Resort is situated right in the heart of the Costa del Sol or the Costa del Golf at the foot of the Benhavis mountains.

If you confuse this course with Marbella Golf which is quite some distance away you will probably miss your tee off time so please take note of the directions before setting out to play.

This course was designed by Dave Thomas who has created some well known and memorable courses around Spain and Portugal. It is a very technical course requiring accurate shots will need all the clubs of your bag. Also the roughs are unrelenting therefore one needs to keep in the fairways. The most challenging are the 3rd which is an uphill dog leg right and the 9th , beware of the trees in the middle of the fairway and the one guarding the approach to the

green.

Bunkers abound and the rough can be difficult for shots that stray. Several lakes, which enhance the scenic value of the course particularly on the back nine, have to be successfully negotiated to preserve a reasonable score-card. Every hole is unique in design and character while affording views of the Mediterranean Sea.

In addition to a championship golf course, Marbella Club Golf Resort offers first class club facilities such as an impressive restaurant with terrace dining overlooking the finishing golf holes and the sea beyond. The Club also offers private members facilities, an extensive pro shop and tennis courts.

In the coming years elegantly designed villas and apartments in a pueblo village setting, as well as a suites hotel, will be discretely constructed in the ample countryside.

This well established course was designed by popular course creator Robert Trent Jones and is a championship18 hole course 6.000 mts long Par 72 and has an impressive layout which challenges players of all levels alike.

There are numerous cleverly placed bunkers and lakes which will have to be successfully negotiated if you are to achieve a decent score.

This course officially opened in 2007 and is already becoming one of the coasts popular 9 hole courses.

The course being so new is in pristine condition and has some splendid wide open American style fairways, there are also some narrow ones which combine to give the player a challenging course without being over strenuous.

Some of the Par 4s are over 400 mts and 2 Par 5s top the 500 mts mark, however the long holes feel shorter due to the design and layout of the course. There are 4 lakes which come into play and with varying slopes this course really is a joy to play.

The views from around the course are quite spectacular looking out over the Mijas Valley and the Mediterranean coastline, there are a good variety of indigenous and imported trees and plants such as Olive, Pine, Willow and Palms, although they are not in abundance as the course is young but will surely enhance the features of the course as times goes by.

There are some great views over the course during the round which enables you to see at least

3 greens at once which give it a wide open appeal which I found exciting, specially if your playing in a competition format as you can see the highs and lows of the various groups on each of the greens.

Here are the dates and venues for this years 2 X 9 ( Two rounds played on the coasts 9 hole Par 3 Courses ) Pitch and Putt Tournament.

The tournament is open to players of all handicaps and ages , male or female and is played at the best 9 Hole Par 3 courses along the coast. It is organised this year once again by the Magna Marbella Golf Club in conjunction with the Golf clubs where each round is being played. The only requisite is that you are a member of the Spanish Federation.

Although the competition is mostly attended by the Spanish players all nationalities are welcome, the atmosphere is friendly and it is a great way to brush up on your Spanish. There are also some excellent prizes on offer at each of the venues . The idea is that a player must compete in at least 5 of the competitions to be able to qualify for the final which is being held at Magna Golf in October 2008.

To enter into any of the rounds please contact the corresponding club in each case to reserve your place, then entrance fee is 30 Euros per player per round and usually includes a cocktail during the prize-giving with some of the clubs including light snacks and tapas.

The Valderrama Championship course has been described by professionals and leading golf writers as having one of the best fairways in Europe. Not an easy course, it has been designed to call forth thought and precision for every shot.

The Par 71 Championship Course measures 6356 metres from the professional tees. The fairways have been described by top pros and leading golf writers as the best in Europe, if not the world. It is not an easy course - nor was it intended to be. It is designed so as to call for thought and precision for every shot.

The course was designed in 1974 by Robert trent Jones, Sr, one of the great golf course architects, and was originally known as Sotogrande New. In 1981 its name was changed to Las Aves.Its incarnation in its present form began in 1984, when Jaime Ortiz-Patiño was able to acquire it from the developers who a few years earlier had laid out the very extensive Sotogrande area so imaginatively and tastefully. Ortiz-Patiño had been one of the first to build a house, and for some years he had nursed the secret ambition to bring Las Aves to a greater potential.

In 1984 he was able to acquire, along with the golf course, certain additional parcels of land that would allow this. Robert Trent Jones willingly agreed to come back and redesign his original layout of ten years earlier. Together the two men spent many hours walking around the course and discussing where and how improvements should be made.

Ortiz-Patiño renamed the course Valderrama, after the ancient estate on which the land is situated.The pair shared a common aim: to create a course that would present a test of golf to the everyday golfer and the first-class player alike, and would bring out the best golf that is in him.Valderrama has since risen in the Golf World rankings to become the No.1 golf course in mainland Europe, a position proudly held since 1989.

The first hole is named Sol y Sombra, the second El Arbol, the third El Tunel, the fourth La Cascada, the fifth Los Altos, the sixth El Vallejo, the seventh El Mirador, the eighth El Bunker, the ninth El Muro, the tenth El Lago, the eleventh Un Sueno, the twelfth Las Camelias, the thirteenth Sin Bunker, the fourteenth La Piedra, the fifteenth El Puerto, the sixteenth Muy Dificil in the words of 1989 Volvo Masters winner Ronan Rafferty 'one of the toughest par-4s I've ever played', the seventeenth Los Gabiones, the eighteenth called Casa Club.

This course opened in 1976 and was designed by Pepe Gancedo masterpiece and is recognised as one of the most beautiful and well established courses on the Costa del Golf.

The Spanish Open was held here in 1977. And although it is not a long course it is a test of skills for players of all levels with the Tee shot here being of prime importance. Wild drives will loose you balls in the trees and woods, the rough, bunkers and water hazards are all very much in play at all times. Don't be fooled by the short 80 metre length third hole, distance here should not be confused with the word easy, Seve Ballesteros scored a 7 here !!.

Torrequebrada was reputed to have been one of Bing Crosby,s favourite courses, Miguel Angel Jimenez practiced hitting many a ball here at the old practice range where his father worked, his brother Juan is there most days teaching.

Although a lot of development has taken place around the course which inevitably has taken away some of the views, this course still manages to retain its intimacy amongst the thousands of established trees which align and border every hole.

If your coming to Malaga to play some serious golf, then the Old Course at San Roque is a must. It’s up at the top end of the price bracket but if you like your golf it’s well worth a visit. If you’re over here on a bit of a social golf tour or have a mix of standards it may not be worth the price

The course is set in a cork forest and there is not to much real estate development yet. The Old course has some long par 4’s and fast and excellent quality greens. The front 9 is quite tight while the back nine opens up a little. The water hazards on the last few holes can easily ruin a good score card.

The new course is not so demanding and the first few holes are a bit disappointing but the latter part of the course is very enjoyable. If you're playing both the courses we would suggest you play the new course first.

The course regularly hosts the PGA qualifying rounds and is always in good condition, though some times we have found the fairways a bit over watered.

The course has a drinks buggy, most important on a summers afternoon when temperatures can easily rise above 35 degrees !!.

The changing rooms are of very good standard with complementary towels.

The Course has it own 5 star hotel, the San Roque Suites, developed around the family mansion of the old Domecq sherry dynasty. The location is quiet but makes a great spot if you’re organsing your company management meeting or want a low key stag weekend. With the courses of Valderrama and the two courses of Sotogrande this is an ideal location to play some of the best courses in Europe.

The Royal Sotogrande Golf Club was founded in 1967 is located on prime golfing land close to the beachfront between the river Guadiaro and Sotogrande marina. It is undoubtedly one of Spains foremost members clubs which was designed beautifully by Robert Trent Jones.

RCG Sotogrande is often voted to be among the top ten golf courses in Europe and boasts mature vegetation with pine, cork oaks, eucalyptus and giant palm trees enhancing the natural beauty of the surroundings.

The greens are large and the tees are very long allowing for variations in pin placements and the length of hole. The contours of the greens are typical Trent Jones and the bunkers were the first in Europe to be filled with brilliant white crushed marble. Another “first” at Sotogrande was the use of Bermuda grass on fairways.There is also an adjacent nine-hole par three course where the dark green trees of the fertile Guadiaro river valley and the outline of the distant sierras also create a lasting impression not to mention the help it provides in improving in your short game.

The course is just outside Marbella on the N340 to Fuengirola. Another relatively new course that is very popular with our high and medium handicappers. The wide fairways and length of the course is ideal for holiday golf. If you are a single figures player you may find the layout of some of the holes a little disappointing.

The wide fairway of the first hole allows for first tee nerves, followed by an easy par 3, should allow most players to get off to a decent start.

The course is part of a real estate development which gives it an urban feel and at times you feel the course has been designed around the development on the first nine.

The back nine is more challenging and has some tough holes. Our favourite is the long par 5 - 13th and the 18th is a nice finishing hole with water around the green.

For the longest drive try the sloping 12th . If you are up for a challenge make the nearest to the pin the difficult 6th .

Like so many of the new courses, space is at a premium so be careful on some of the fairways that run parallel with other holes.

What the course lacks in space, it certainly makes up for in quality and service. The club house is impressive and the shower facilities are excellent. There is a buggy service from the car park to the clubhouse and starters on the 1st tee.

The driving and putting practise areas are first class and you can play off the grass. There is also a drinks buggy.

Although the first few holes are quite flat there are a number of steep climbs as you progress around the course. It is quite a difficult walk if you are not use to playing in warm weather.

The club house has a nice restaurant and bar with a terrace overlooking the practise area.

Santa Maria is one of the most popular holiday golf course on the coast situated conveniently between Fuengirola and Marbella with easy access off the main road.

The course suites high to medium handicap players. It’s quite short and is one to try and fit in at the beginning of your tour as most of the group will come in with a decent score. On your way out 2 holes have a nasty climb up to the green and a steep path from the 5th green to the 6th tee is a difficult walk even for the fitter golfer, part from that an easy walk.

The first nine were designed by Antonio Garcia and the second which is a little wider by the clubs technical team.

There are a number of water hazard on the course which adds to its difficulty.

Our favourite holes are the dogleg 8th hole par 5 which needs a good tee shot to make the dogleg, your second shot needs to be straight as there is water running down the right - which can’t always be seen from the fairway and out of bounds on you left. The dogleg 13th hole par 5 again a good tee shot is required over ravine if your are short and need to cut the corner your second shot will be over another ravine.

Favourite hole for the longest drive is the long par 4, 16th hole, nearest to the pin is definitely the short 15th with a bird’s eye view of the green from the natural terrain.

The changing facilities are adequate and the club has a bar. Due to its popularity the course is always busy in high season which can sometimes make it a slow round.

I often ask players on the coast, both locals and visitors which course is there favourite to play and I must say 8 times out of 10 they will say Santana Golf…Why I ask.

Well the Santana Golf & Country Club is an 18 Hole golf course par 72 of approx. 6203 metres in length, set in 138 acres of picturesque parkland. The course, sympathetically laid out by the architect Cabell B. Robinson, is set in a former avocado plantation which provided a natural solution to many problems. The final result is a magnificent course with wide and well defined fairways on level terrain, hence easily walkable, where water features play an important albeit not excessive part in the overall design.

Each hole has two championship tees and two tees for general play for both men and ladies– wide and well manicured putting greens surrounded by strategically placed bunkers, filled with sand produced from crushed marble.

The beautiful environment with its natural surrounding will give the golfer the overriding impression of an existing maturity in every aspect of the course. Santana Golf is technically speaking a demanding course as the unique design of each hole is intended to give a continuous challenge, even for the more experienced player. The layout of the greens, well protected by greenside bunkers, as well as the many water hazards spread throughout the course, will challenge every golfer and require good course management as well as the use of every golf shot in the bag.

To sum it all up, we are dealing here with a magnificent and spectacular course, where all these combined elements, together with the superb climate of the area have made Santana Golf arguably one of the best courses on the Costa del Sol.

Designed by Javier Arana and opened in 1965, par 72 the front 9 is a gently rolling terrain and the back 9 is quite flat. An old favourite of many regular golfers on the coast. The course provides a good test for all handicappers and the open fairways means you can usually find your ball.

The mature setting with many palm trees and plants give it a true Mediterranean feel. The courses signature hole is the long par-4 4th hole with its sea view. From the 4th tee check out the position of the 5th green to your left as it is blind shot from your approach up the 5th fairway.

The 2 most difficult holes on the course if you have not played it before is the 8th which requires two really accurate long shots to reach the green and the 10th which is a blind 90 degree dogleg.

A nice hole for the longest drive is the 14th and the 13th for nearest the pin (though all the par 3’s a short).

The course is one of the more walkable tracks if you need a bit of exercise. There are several water fountains on the course and a drinks buggy.

The Club house has good shower facilities and a nice bar terrace over looking the 9th . The course also has it own small 5 star hotel.

This was the first links course on the Costa Del Sol and the oldest having been started in 1929 with a primitive 9 hole course which was later expanded to 18, recently a further 9 holes have been added which provides golfers a choice of three 9 hole combinations.

After almost 70 years the installations are still maintained to high standards and the course and club are as good to play as ever.

It is probably the most popular course with the regular local golfer due to its position close to Malaga and for being noted as excellent value for money , specially the annual memberships which are always great value. On the same hand though it is probably underrated by the golfing tourist which tend to pay the more well known courses along the rest of the Costa del Sol.

Due to its age the course has a pleasant natural maturity about it, the flat open fairways are forgiving for the higher handicap players and welcoming to the beginner, there are also a few huge par 4s on the back nine to cope with. Which make the last six holes quite challenging unless your are a confident iron player. There is no short Par 3, the shortest is the 150 Meter 13th. And the hardness of the bunker sand maybe a little disappointing for most players.

The greens have been steadily improved over the past few years and the course is flat so can be walked , however it is generally a very busy course so take care to book in advance when possible.

Monte Mayor Golf is stunningly situated in the foothills of the picturesque town of Benhavis and although it is quite a drive up to thecourse ( pass through San Pedro de Alcantara west of Marbella for some 5 kms then turn right toward the toll motorway, the course is located some 7 kms from the coast ) the journey is well worth it.

Monte Mayor opened in 1989 and is a par 71 ( 5.354 metres off the yellow tees ) and was created by the renowned course designer Jose Gancedo .

Monte Mayor is one of the most spectacular courses on the Costa del Sol , its fairways wind through dramatic gullies, cascading waterfalls, ravines and gullies and offers superb views from almost anywhere on the course. It is undoubtedly challenging and at first quite daunting, however once you have played the course a couple of times its true attraction becomes clear with many golfers returning time and time again to enjoy this unique golfing experience. The course nestles perfectly in the natural location created by the Serrania de Ronda mountain range and has a captivating natural beauty which inspires many a golfing enthusiast from around the world.

The first two holes may lead you into a sense that the course is may be easier than you think, be warned though after that your going to have to be on your bestgame to complete it within your par. The first nine is very tight though the back nine does open up a bit, to really appreciate the course you need to play it a couple of times. It's very much a thinking course so be careful on what holes you're taking the drive out as accuracy is often more important than length on this course. The best thing is not to take the course to seriously specially if its your first time out, my advice is enjoy every hole for what it is, learn and plan your next outing and simply enjoy its raw magnificence during each and every hole. I must say that for pure natural beauty , tranquillity and superb scenery, Monte Mayor has to be my favourite courses on the Costa del Sol. Yes it is most definitely one of the coasts more challenging courses to play but the benefits far out way anything so irrelevant as.......breaking par !!.

For nearest the pin depending on your standards, choose either the first or second par 3 on the first nine. The first is located at the 3rd and at 165 Meters ( 180 Yards ) a mid-long-iron is recommended, the second par 3 ( 5th Hole ) plays at 100 meters (109.35 Yards) of the yellows, a short iron to medium at most depending on the wind. 0n the 4th the fairway leaps from one plateau to another on this par 5, ending in a green backed by oleander trees and a white marble rock face with a waterfall cascading over it. The 8th a blind tee shot with the green guarded by natural rock formations. Still many consider this par 4 the 'easiest' hole on the course!. The 16th is a long par 5, reaching it with a second shot after a long first drive is a joy to the eye. The green is some 100 metres below the elevated tee - a vantage point where you enjoy spectacular 360 views over the mountains and sea. The 18th is a short par steep downhill par 3, enclosed by lush vegetation and hills. Once you manage to get your ball over the creek that guards it, you re home free!

The current club house is soon to be prepared into an extensive sports centre including tennis, gym and spa facilities.

David Leadbetter Golf Academy at La Cala Golf

The David Leadbetter golf academy is located on the par 3 course at the top end of the La Cala Golf Resort and as the name suggests is part of the Leadbetter group of golf teaching establishment currently in operation around the world.

Developed by legendary golf guru David Leadbetter, and expanded worldwide by IMG. His philosophy is simple. The same proven techniques that are taught to top professionals can be applied to golfers at all levels from complete beginners to seasoned pros. Whatever their handicap, ages or abilities.

The David Leadbetter Golf Academy ( DLGA ) is located at the impressive La Cala resort. The fully qualified teaching staff at the academy is head up by club director by head pro Quintin van der Berg r ( P.G.A , G.S.E.B ), he is joined by Marc Duncan and new addition Javier Garrido .

The academy is located at the top part of the La Cala Resort and set by a picturesque, well maintained and challenging 6 hole par 3 course. The main academy area houses the offices, caddie master, a small but selective pro shop offering the up to date Taylor made club collections, a unique Taylor Made performance lab ( the only one of its kind in Europe ) , a new putting room, a club fitting section and a cosy tv and lounge area.

There are two master club fitters at the academy Craig Bryden and Vincent Doyle, Craig heads up the performance lab which includes the personalised club fitting on a technical level whilst Vincent aptly takes care of the hands on side , between them they provide clubs that fit each players requirements perfectly.

Located around the academy building there are two practice greens, bunker areas and the main practice range which is a large facility used by the whole La Cala Resort. Thankfully there are no mats in this area so balls are hit of grass only, I have never been keen on mats as I believe most of them can cause more than there fair share of sports related injuries as the pressure is absorbed into the body rather than the ground when playing of grass, thus causing back pains, tinnitus etc etc.

There are special family membership or individual rates available at the academy which includes full use of the Par 3 course at any time and group lesson " Golf Clinic " with one of the Academy Pros which is held every Saturday between 5 and 6 pm and is a really good way to brush up on all aspects of your game. Members also hold monthly competitions held on one Sunday of each month which is open to players of all standards. The atmosphere is friendly and informal and includes prizes for the winners and some welcoming apres golf snacks and drinks courtesy of competition host Lisa.

A fairly new nine hole par 3 course nestling in the foothills of La Concha, situated just of the N340 main coastal highway with spectacularMediterranean views.

I have played this course on several occasions and can honestly say that this course is one if the finest 9 hole par 3 courses I have played on.It is very underated and should be busier than it currently is, on the bright side its great to have the course almost to yourself if you play on a week day. The course is really divided into two halves, one is more open and has the easiest holes which are the 1st, 2nd, 6th,7th 8th and the longish 9th which leads back alongsidethe caddy masters office and pro shop. At the back end of the course you will find holes 3, 4 and 5 which are the most difficult and are set into the hills with lushvegetation and presents a real challenge for all levels of handicap.

The layout ambles around slight ondulations, hills and lakes and provide a great way to practice and polish up your short game. The greens and course though are in excellent condition and I would highly recommend the Monte Paraiso golf club to all players who enjoy playing 9 holes on a quality par 3 course.

The current price of 25 Euros for a round is great value , 30 Euros and you can play a full 18 holes.

Miraflores golf is situated within the one of the Costa del Sols most popular developments on the Mijas coastline known as the Urbanisation Riviera del Sol . It is conveniently located between the well known resorts of Fuengirola , Marbella and was created by Falco Nardi opening its doors for the first time in 1990. Miraflores golf now has around 1,500 shareholders with a reduced playing membership of 800.

The course has recently undergone some substantial up-grading and although it does seem hilly at first glance , the course actually follows the contours of the valley very well and not as demanding as a lot of other courses on the coast . There are however some stunning views over the mountains and Mediterranean sea as you play your way round.

The course is around 4900 metres off the yellow tees which is quite short compared to most courses however each of the holes is unique and offers a different challenge which make its an interesting and thoughtful course to play.

Accuracy is a must at Miraflores if you are to make your Par although you will be well rewarded for making long straight drives.

Miraflores golf is a respectively easier course to play than most and is well suitable for players of all ages and levels. The greens are quite fast and most of the fairways are fairly level and wide, there are also a number of elevated greens which do require a good amount of walking so a buggy is recommend though not a must, when I last played the course I was pleasantly surprised by the number of players who did in fat choose to walk using a trolley rather then hire a buggy.

There are a number of picturesque water obstacles and white bunkers filled with crushed marble.

As Miraflores Golf moves steadily towards a members only club there is a warm and inviting atmosphere around the installations. There is a friendly restaurant and bar located on the grounds which offers excellent food at very reasonable prices ( 10 Euros for an eat all you can Sunday Roast lunch being top of the pick ). There is also a well stocked pro shop, buggy hire, golf academy, driving range, pro lessons, bar cafeteria and a putting green located behind the club house.

The club is well established and has a very agreeable , warm and friendly atmosphere to it, the staff where are all very pleasant and helpful during my last visit in November 2007.
