Five amateur golfers and their captain travelled half way around the world to represent Spain (popn 46 Million) and make history in the 2010 World Golfers Championships (WGC). Top 10 individual finishes by all five members in their categories resulted in Spain (popn 46 M) achieving second place overall behind Russia (popn 142 M).
Spanish Team
The second place needs to be put in the context that twenty three countries competed in the world amateur final over four days on four different courses in the Hua-Hin area of Thailand.
The Spanish team comprised of: Juan Antonio Ruiz Batana (hcp 0-5); Adam Ford Gaspar (hcp 6-10); Pedro Antonio Corral (hcp 11-15); Eduardo Casasola Rueda (hcp 16-20) and Carlos Ruiz Castilla (hcp 21-25)
Team Captain, Ana Nyblom of La Cala Resort, commented that as the biggest golf complex in Spain, La Cala is very proud to be associated with the individual performances and with the team representing Spain taking second place overall. “We believe that one of the best ways to show our commitment to amateur golf is to host the Spanish qualifiers of this great event which provides five golfers with an opportunity to represent their country in a world class event that has all the attributes of a tournament on the professional circuit.”
A formal home-coming presentation of the world silver medallists to the Spanish press and media is being organised by La Cala Resort in the near future in conjunction with the Townhall of Mijas and the many supporters of the Team.
The WGC was first held in 1995 and the location for the final changes every year. In 2011, the finalist will go to South Africa. Arnold Palmer is the WGC’s Tournament Patron and Severiano Ballesteros is Honorary Chairman of the Advisory Board. It is the intention of La Cala Resort to continue supporting the WGC in the coming years.
