Seve Ballesteros Foundation Challenge - La Cala Golf

Campo America at La Cala Resort, the biggest golf complex in Spain, will be one of the courses to host the Seve Ballesteros Foundation Challenge on 9th April, coinciding with the professionals’ birthday.

It is hoped that more than 12,000 fans will take part in this charity tournament which aims to raise funds for the Seve Ballesteros Foundation, a private institution which helps with research into brain tumours. The Seve Ballesteros Foundation, created in June 2009, will use the money raised in this tournament to launch the FSB-CNIO laboratory, a lab which will undertake research into brain tumours, a type of cancer which affects men and women almost equally, with children under 10 years and adults over 50 years being the most at risk groups (the average age is 56).

In the Seve Ballesteros Foundation Challenge, 150 different golf clubs from all over Spain will participate, with each golf club donating a portion of the green fee paid by the participants, to the Foundation. At La Cala Resort, the format will be medal play (hcap) with maximum double par, a popular format as it allows the player to pick up the ball during the strokeplay competition without penalty.

There will be trophies for the best two results in each of the six categories, (hcps 0-5.4, 5.5-10.4, 10.5-15.4, 15.5-20.4, 20.5-25.4 y 25.5-36.4) and a further prize for the best overall scratch result of the day. Men and ladies will participate in the same categories.

Furthermore, exclusively to La Cala Resort, the best result of a Spanish nationality participant in each of the six categories will qualify for a place in the national final of the World Golfers Championship which will take place at La Cala Resort during the last week of August.

The entry fee will be €50 per person, which includes the green fee, shared buggy and a donation of €20 to the Foundation. Anyone unable to take part in the event who would still like to make a contribution may do so directly to the bank account of the Foundation, account number 0182 7378 13 0201526339.

Spain - Ryder Cup Candidate 2018

Spain - 2018 Ryder Cup Candidate

All the clubs and the Spanish golf federation are all backing Spain’s bid to hold the Ryder Cup in 2018, undoubtedly one of golf’s most important and prestigious tournaments.

Ryder Cup Europe confirmed that six countries – France, Germany, Holland, Portugal, Spain and Sweden, have all announced their intention to bid for The 2018 Ryder Cup. The winning host nation will be will be announced by April 2011.

There are many reasons why Madrid should host the 2018 Ryder Cup no to mention the normally excellent weather conditions during the month of September. Malaga born Gofling wizard Miguel Ángel Jiménez noted during a press conference at the Open de Andalucía in Málaga, “Madrid is the best option for the Ryder Cup, and I’m not just saying that because I’m Spanish. It’s the most southern-most city of all the candidates, and the weather is the key at that time of the year”

Of course every one knows that the last time the Ryder Cup was held in Spain, at the fantastic Valderrama Club in 1997 torrential rain on the eve of the tournament threatened its scheduled start. However due to Valderrama’s exceptional irrigation system it meant there were no delays and it became a enthralling contest superbly won by captain Severiano Ballesteros’s determined Europeans 14½ to 13½ against the Americans captained by another golfing great, Tom Kite.
